BANYAN INITIATES NEW CERTIFICATION PROGRAM TO QUALIFY
386- and i486-BASED PERSONAL COMPUTERS AS VINES NETWORK SERVERS
WESTBORO, Mass., June 18, 1990 -- Banyan Systems, the leader in
corporate-wide PC networking, today announced a new program to
facilitate the certification of personal computers as VINES network
servers. The Banyan Platform Certification Program enhances and
accelerates the qualification process, letting vendors evaluate
their own systems as VINES servers by means of Banyan-developed
test suites. Vendors return test results to Banyan for validation
and approval. The program also allows for a cooperative marketing
effort to help vendors promote their hardware for use with VINES.
According to Banyan Vice President James Allchin, "Certification
is a customer's assurance that individual types and models of
personal computers are fully compatible with -- and capable of
being used as network servers for -- VINES. Thanks to our new
certification program, hardware vendors will find the task of
qualifying their equipment for VINES considerably easier and faster
than in the past. Consequently, Banyan customers will have a wider
assortment of server platforms to choose for their VINES networks
than ever before."

The Banyan Platform Certification Program is now open to all
manufacturers of Intel 386TM- and i486TM-based hardware systems.
Subsequent phases of the program will expand it to include
multiprocessor systems. The first hardware platform to be certified
as a VINES server under the new program is the NEC PowerMateTM
386/25, from NEC Technologies, Inc., of Boxborough, Mass., which
participated as a Beta Test Site for the program.
Since the introduction in 1988 of VINES support for 386 systems ...
the first 32-bit native mode network operating system for the
386... Banyan has been conducting an internal program to certify
an increasing number and variety of 386 and i486-based PCs as VINES
servers.
